Last week I joined a new co-working/community space in downtown Kitchener run by Builders Club @ the Startup Barn and it's awesome!
I'd been looking for a local community of people who like technology and who like making stuff, so I was super excited when I attended an event there for the first time a couple of weeks ago and got talking to Jesse Rodgers about the space. They regularly run tech-focused events, and it looks like Dev House has moved there now too.
(Side note: I’m planning to host a local in-person Academics in the Wild event here in the Fall. If you’d like to stay in the loop, subscribe to AITW events here.)
The philosophy of Builders Club is pretty much: people making cool stuff just need to be around other people making cool stuff and the rest will sort itself out. The definition of making cool stuff is pretty broad too, it's not just tech startups, but people building communities and other projects...I think a guy doing a music PhD was checking the space out yesterday.
So far, I think the philosophy is working. I already got talking to Tasha Van Vlack who is building a community in the nonprofit space (The Nonprofit Hive) and Ben Su, a former lawyer, who is building AI tools to help people with the legal side of setting up their own companies. It’s crazy how much you can learn from a quick chat with someone.
If you’d like to become a member at Builders Club, you can apply here.
Update: it’s also great having people to go for after-work-drinks with!
